The redesign of Milton’s main street focuses on delivering a significant and enduring enhancement to the town’s streetscape. The project aims to improve both the physical and visual connections for pedestrians and vehicles along Union Street, linking key buildings and elements within the town.
RMM's proposed design seeks to create a dynamic and cohesive streetscape that slows through traffic while visually enriching and increasing the town's overall appeal. This is achieved through a series of thoughtful design interventions. Improved wayfinding signage will guide residents and visitors more effectively, while enhanced crossings will ensure safer pedestrian movement. The creation of outdoor community park spaces and plazas will provide inviting areas for social interaction, relaxation, and community events. Additionally, spaces for al-fresco dining will contribute to a vibrant street life, encouraging local businesses and fostering a lively atmosphere.
Interpretation panels will be strategically placed throughout the streetscape to engage both locals and visitors with the rich cultural history and attractions of the region. These panels will serve as educational tools, connecting people with Milton’s past and present, enhancing their experience and understanding of the area.
RMM's design rationale for Milton’s main street is deeply rooted in the town's local, cultural, and historical context. By drawing inspiration from the architectural forms and materials of existing and historical buildings, the design aims to reflect the local vernacular. This approach not only pays homage to Milton's heritage but also creates a recognizable and strong streetscape character that is inviting and memorable. The careful selection of design elements ensures a sense of continuity and place, making the town’s main street a distinctive and integral part of the community.
