RMM has been privileged to collaborate with the team at Flockhill Station since 2019, leading the landscape design vision for this remarkable high-country destination. Our work has centred on shaping a masterplan that responds to the site's dramatic setting, integrating contemporary hospitality, heritage conservation, and ecological sensitivity into a cohesive and immersive experience.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Lake Pearson and the surrounding ranges, the landscape design embraces the raw beauty of the Canterbury High Country. The masterplan includes the striking new homestead, the restoration of historic farm buildings, the creation of the Sugarloaf restaurant, guest villas, spa facilities, and a network of pathways that link these elements seamlessly within the wider station environment. Productive gardens, carefully sited staff quarters, and refined outdoor spaces further enrich the visitor experience while maintaining a light touch on the land.
From the earliest conceptual sketches through to the detailed design and implementation, the process has been a collaborative and considered journey. Working closely with the Flockhill owners and wider project team, RMM has sought to create a landscape that not only reflects the station’s rugged character but also enhances its connection to place.
With five years of planning and design now realised, it is incredibly rewarding to see Flockhill Station welcoming guests from all over the world into a landscape that is at once timeless and contemporary – a destination where nature, history, and hospitality converge in harmony. RMM continues to be involved in the ongoing evolution of this extraordinary place, ensuring its legacy endures for many years to come.

A deep respect for the natural and cultural heritage of Flockhill has underpinned every aspect of the design. The region’s distinctive flora and fauna, shaped by centuries of dynamic alpine conditions, have informed a planting strategy that is both ecologically appropriate and visually compelling. The result is a landscape that feels authentically of its place – where guests can immerse themselves in the vastness of the high country, appreciating its untamed beauty while enjoying a comfortable and thoughtfully curated retreat.
