Located in West Wānaka and nestled amidst a well-established Kanuka Forest, this site offers breathtaking 360° views of Rocky Mountain, Cattle Flat, Lake Wānaka, Paddock Bay, and Roy’s Peak. The existing topography and dense vegetation presented numerous design opportunities as well as challenges, all of which were thoughtfully addressed in the project’s execution.
The design vision for this remarkable property focused on creating beautiful yet understated spaces that would allow residents and visitors to fully appreciate the extraordinary natural surroundings and panoramic views. A significant emphasis was placed on maintaining and enhancing the native vegetation and biodiversity of the site. To achieve this, indigenous plants were carefully selected to integrate seamlessly with the existing landscape, promoting ecological sustainability.
The 'wild' character of the landscape was celebrated through the use of local and rustic materials, which blend harmoniously with the natural environment. This approach not only preserved the site’s inherent beauty but also accentuated its unique features. Pathways, seating areas, and other landscape elements were designed to appear as natural extensions of the environment, fostering a sense of unity and coherence.
RMM worked closely with the client throughout the project to ensure their vision was fully realized.
