Josh joins the team as a full-time team member, having previously completed an internship with RMM in our Ōtautahi studio during his studies. It’s been great to see Josh’s journey come full circle as he returns to the practice, now bringing his skills and passion for landscape to the Whakatū Nelson team.

Academic & Professional Background
Josh studied Landscape Architecture at Lincoln University, where he excelled academically and graduated top of his year. His final-year project focused on the Maitahi River in Whakatū/Nelson, exploring how water, place and people can be woven together to support resilience and adaptation in dynamic, at-risk landscapes. The project investigated how Te Ao Māori principles and nature-based solutions can work together to support flood resilience and urban growth. Through this work, Josh explored how rivers can be given space to breathe while enabling communities to live alongside them, helping to rebalance oranga - the wellbeing of water, land and people. It feels particularly fitting that Josh is now living and working in Whakatū, strengthening his connection to the landscape that helped shape his design thinking.

Design Interests
Growing up in rural Banks Peninsula, surrounded by vineyards and natural landscapes, Josh developed a strong connection to place and the natural environment. His design approach reflects this lived experience, viewing landscapes as holistic, interconnected systems where water, land and people are intrinsically linked. Josh is particularly interested in how landscape architecture can work with natural processes to create environments that support ecological resilience, cultural values and community wellbeing.

Beyond the Studio
Outside of work, Josh is an avid mountain biker and hiker, often exploring remote valleys and alpine environments throughout the Southern Alps. His passion for the outdoors continues to inform and inspire his connection to landscape and design approach.

We’re delighted to welcome Josh to RMM and look forward to seeing his contribution to the Whakatū studio and our projects.
