Kāinga Ora, Māngere West: Transforming Social Housing Environments
May 08, 2021
Since 2019, RMM’s Tāmaki Makaurau studio has been collaborating with Kāinga Ora to develop high-quality and meaningful outdoor environments for social housing residents in Tāmaki Makaurau. One of the standout initiatives in this collaboration is the Māngere West A56-A58 project, which is progressing towards creating a vibrant and cohesive community space.
A Cluster of Community Living
Māngere West A56-A58 comprises a cluster of adjacent sites featuring a mix of walk-up apartments and standalone dwellings. This innovative design includes a range of shared facilities that enhance community living. Among these are a community room and laundry, play spaces, and raised vegetable potager gardens, all thoughtfully designed to foster a sense of community and engagement among residents.
Integrating History and Landscape
RMM’s design approach for Māngere West A56-A58 skillfully ties together the site’s proximity to the Manukau Harbour, the historical land use patterns, and opportunities for residents to connect with the landscape. The designs celebrate the area's rich history and natural beauty, creating a seamless blend of past and present.
Engaging and Inclusive Spaces
The use of landform and changes in level, combined with the incorporation of large-format site furniture and diverse play items, creates dynamic environments where residents of all ages can congregate, play, and interact. These common areas are designed to be inclusive and engaging, providing spaces that encourage social interaction and community building.
A Vision for the Future
The Kāinga Ora, Māngere West project is a testament to RMM’s commitment to creating environments that not only meet the functional needs of social housing residents but also enhance their quality of life. By integrating historical context, natural landscapes, and community-focused design, this project is set to become a model for future social housing developments.
As we continue to make progress on the Māngere West A56-A58 project, RMM is excited to see how these thoughtfully designed spaces will positively impact the lives of residents.
