Perched high above Queenstown, the Belfast Terrace Residence enjoys sweeping views of Lake Wakatipu, Cecil Peak, and Walter Peak. RMM’s landscape design is carefully composed to frame these views, ensuring they can be enjoyed from every part of the residence. A thoughtful arrangement of planting balances openness and structure, with a mix of trees and shrubs that enhance the experience of the site while maintaining a sense of enclosure where needed.

A defining feature of the design is the internal courtyard, which is conceived as a pocket of New Zealand bush. This secluded space is planted with native species, including punga, ferns, and groundcovers, interspersed with schist boulders to create a serene and immersive experience. The native border around the property also fosters habitat for birdlife, strengthening the ecological connections with Queenstown Hill and adding to the atmosphere with an abundance of birdsong.

The steep topography of the site is addressed through terraced gardens that manage level changes without compromising views. Multiple outdoor living spaces are positioned to provide comfort throughout the year, offering a variety of sheltered nooks, open terraces, and a poolside retreat. An outdoor kitchen, seamlessly connecting the rear and front terraces, creates an ideal setting for entertaining, all set against the dramatic backdrop of the surrounding mountains.
The planting palette follows a ‘native border with an exotic interior’ approach. A selection of deciduous trees and flowering exotics introduces seasonal colour and textural variation, while native plantings provide a robust framework, tying the design into the surrounding Queenstown landscape. This contrast creates a balanced and responsive scheme that complements both the built form and the wider natural setting.
