Ōtākaro Avon Loop | Christchurch
+ Info
The Ōtākaro Avon Loop revitalization project is a transformative river esplanade initiative located on the city fringe of Christchurch. Serving as the lead landscape architects, RMM managed every aspect of this extensive project, from initial concept design and budgeting to the meticulous preparation of detailed documentation, as well as overseeing contract execution and maintenance.

This project addresses the complex post-earthquake landscape, which has been significantly altered in terms of levels, drainage, flooding patterns, and river alignment along a former section of Oxford Terrace between Fitzgerald Avenue and Madras Street. Such a significant transformation required a sensitive and strategic approach to landscape architecture to ensure both aesthetic and functional integration with the natural environment.

A key focus of the design was the creation of sanctuary habitats through riverbank enhancement and improved access to the water’s edge via a shared pathway. Approximately 17,000 indigenous plants were meticulously installed along 10 kilometers of riverbanks, dramatically boosting local biodiversity and stabilizing the banks against erosion. This substantial planting effort enhances the ecological health of the area, providing habitats for local wildlife and promoting a balanced ecosystem.

The design also includes a new kayak ramp and boardwalk, thoughtfully integrated into the new planting areas while preserving existing vegetation. This approach minimizes environmental disruption and enhances the recreational experience for users. The shared pathway meanders along the former roadway alignment, offering a scenic and accessible route for both pedestrians and cyclists. This pathway is thoughtfully designed with gateway features, street furniture, interpretive signage, and a footbridge that spans the sensitive root system of established trees, ensuring the preservation of mature vegetation that contributes to the area's character.

At the eastern end of the esplanade, a new car park has been constructed to provide convenient access to the boat ramp. This addition ensures that visitors can easily reach the water and take full advantage of the recreational opportunities offered by the revitalized esplanade. The overall design not only enhances user experience but also underscores a commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement.
The Ōtākaro Avon Loop revitalization project, led by RMM, showcases a comprehensive approach to transforming a post-earthquake landscape into a vibrant river esplanade. By addressing altered drainage and flooding patterns and enhancing riverbank stability with 17,000 indigenous plants, the project boosts biodiversity and ecological health. Key features include a new kayak ramp, boardwalk, and a shared pathway with interpretive signage and a footbridge that preserves mature trees. The design ensures seamless integration of natural elements with recreational facilities, fostering a harmonious balance between urban development and environmental conservation.
