Peter Rough, now retired, boasts an illustrious career spanning over 45 years in the field of landscape architecture.
Throughout his extensive career, Peter has developed a profound expertise in landscape and visual assessments, particularly in the context of Assessments of Environmental Effects (AEE) to comply with the requirements of the Resource Management Act (RMA). In recent years, his focus has been on infrastructure and renewable energy projects, where his insights have been invaluable.
Peter's considerable experience includes preparing detailed landscape evidence and serving as an expert witness. His expertise has been sought after for numerous council and Environment Court hearings, as well as before Boards of Inquiry and Special Tribunals, for projects across New Zealand and in Australia. His ability to present clear, comprehensive evidence has been instrumental in guiding many complex projects to successful outcomes.
Currently, Peter focuses on mentoring and peer review roles, sharing his vast knowledge and experience with the next generation of landscape architects. Although he no longer undertakes new project work, his contributions continue to shape the industry and ensure high standards of practice.
Peter's dedication to the profession extends beyond his project work. He has held several significant roles within the New Zealand Institute of Landscape Architects (NZILA), including terms on the Executive Committee. He has also represented the Institute at International Federation of Landscape Architects’ Congress meetings, showcasing his commitment to advancing the field both locally and internationally.
Outside of his professional life, Peter is a passionate tramper and sailor. He enjoys participating in yacht races in Lyttelton and Akaroa harbours and in Tasman Bay, as well as cruising in the Marlborough Sounds and on the Southern Lakes. His love for the outdoors reflects his lifelong connection to the landscapes he has dedicated his career to enhancing and preserving.
