Gerard O'Connell leads RMM Landscape Architects' Wānaka studio, bringing over seven years of diverse experience in landscape architecture from both Denmark and New Zealand. After spending seven years in Europe, including five and a half years in Copenhagen, Gerard returned to New Zealand in 2020 to join the RMM team in Wanaka.
Gerard’s journey in landscape architecture began after a period of traveling and adventurous work, including driving tour buses around Europe and ski guiding in the French Alps. He then pursued a master’s degree in landscape architecture at the University of Copenhagen. During his time in Denmark, Gerard gained invaluable experience working with several Danish firms. His work encompassed all facets of landscape architecture, including design, building documentation, landscape evaluation, and contract observation and administration.
Throughout his career, Gerard has played a pivotal role in designing and delivering a range of complex projects. His portfolio includes public spaces, memorials, play spaces, cycleways, urban center upgrades, public parks, theme parks, as well as educational and healthcare facilities. Gerard’s ability to manage and execute these projects demonstrates his comprehensive understanding of both the creative and practical aspects of landscape architecture.
At RMM, Gerard’s leadership in the Wanaka office ensures the seamless integration of innovative design with practical implementation. His approach is characterized by meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to delivering projects that enhance the community and environment.
In addition to his professional achievements, Gerard is passionate about an active lifestyle. He enjoys triathlons, snowboarding, skiing, water sports, and exploring local eateries. His enthusiasm for the outdoors and local culture reflects his dedication to both his personal and professional life, making him a well-rounded and inspiring leader within the RMM team.
